Things to know about Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure for the correction of the shape and/or reconstruction of the human nose. It can improve the shape and profile of the nose, or the ability to breathe or oftentimes both.

The structure of the nose is made up of the nasal bones at the top and cartilages below closer to the tip, rhinoplasty can change both.

What one needs to know about rhinoplasty:
It can be done for medical reasons like congenital or birth deformities, or for damage caused by severe trauma, or diseases like skin cancer. It can also be done for cosmetic reasons when a patient is not happy with the shape, size, height, or profile of their nose.
After the surgery, it will take some time for the swelling on the nose to settle down and for the nose to achieve its final shape.
The sense of smell and unobstructed breathing may both be affected immediately following the surgery. This generally recovers over the next few weeks.
It is not uncommon to have slight bleeding or discharge of old blood from the nostrils during the postoperative period. This is self-limiting and stops in a few days.
Post-operation the nose might feel a bit numb, but this recovers to normal sensations as the swelling settles.

While you will see the results pretty soon, we always advise our patients to wait for 3 – 6 months before evaluating their final results, as in some patients the swelling can go down slower than others.
If you are already on some form of regular medication before surgery, inform your surgeon without fail, as some are known to increase bleeding. Take no medication without consultation.

If you are a smoker, stop. Smoking slows the healing process and greatly increases the chances of infection and other complications.

Consult with both Cosmetic Surgeons and ENT specialists before deciding to go ahead. Get multiple opinions, research the subject, and take your time. It is after all your nose on your face.
